Based on the history of the German-language Encyclopaedia Judaica, the author studies Jewish knowledge cultures during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Encyclopaedia Judaica first appeared in Berlin between 1928 and 1934. It was the fruit of the work of many Jewish authors, scholars and politicians from various countries who took up the ideas of other, existing encyclopedias and expanded on them. Using the history of the Encyclopaedia Judaica as an example, Arndt Engelhardt traces the paths of Jewish knowledge cultures in the 19th and 20th centuries. He interprets the publication of these volumes as the strategic attempt to create a new Jewish canon of culture and science in modern times. German text.
Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden in Amerika und in Europa mehrere judische Enzyklopadien publiziert. Diese erganzten sich, reprasentierten aber auch zum Teil konkurrierende wissenschaftliche und politische Programme. Die Studie verfolgt die Auspragung judischer Wissenskulturen im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert ausgehend von der deutschsprachigen Encyclopaedia Judaica, die zwischen 1928 und 1934 in Berlin erschien. Sie war das Ergebnis der Arbeit judischer Publizisten, Gelehrter und Politiker aus zahlreichen Landern, die die Konzepte bestehender judischer Enzyklopadien rezipierten und weiter entwickelten. Arndt Engelhardt zeichnet Entstehung, Struktur, Organisation und Mitarbeiterschaft der Encyclopaedia Judaica nach und deutet das Unternehmen als strategischen Versuch, einen neuartigen Kanon judischer Kultur und Wissenschaft der Moderne zu bilden.
