Marcell Restle und Johannes Koder konnten in Zusammenarbeit mit Forschern der Osterreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Technischen Universitat Wien in den Jahren 1978 bis 1980 – dank der Unterstutzung durch den Osterreichischen Fonds zur Forderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung – Surveys im Hauran, der antiken Auranitis, im Suden Syriens durchfuhren. In dieser spatantiken und fruhbyzantinischen Siedlungslandschaft sind (bzw. waren damals noch) umfangreiche Reste von Reprasentationsbauten, Kirchen, Klostern und landwirtschaftlichen Gehoften erhalten und teils in gutem Zustand. Im Zuge der Feldforschungen wurden mehr als hundert Einzelbauten und Denkmalskomplexe untersucht, photographisch dokumentiert und photogrammetrisch vermessen. In der vorliegenden Publikation wird ein erster Teil, die baulichen Denkmaler und Inschriften in Azra’a und Saqra, verbunden mit einer historischen, kunsthistorischen und methodologischen Einfuhrung vorgelegt. Dass die hier publizierten Denkmaler in den vergangenen dreissig Jahren teilweise erheblichen Schaden genommen haben, gibt der bildlichen Dokumentation einen besonderen zusatzlichen Wert.
