Annales Islamologiques 46
Dossier: L'exercice du pouvoir a l'age sultanats. Production, manifestation, reception
By (author) IFAO
The 46th issue of the Annales islamologiques includes a folder called ” Exercising Power in the Age of the Sultanates: Production, Manifestation, Reception ” and varia. Fourteen articles, an introduction and preface develop the theme of this issue, led by Sylvie Denoix and Irene Bierman. After the time of the Caliphate, marked by a structure of power in which political leadership and religious leadership were combined in the person of the Prince, and before the reforms (the Tanzimat) and the birth of modern states, the entire Muslim world knew, from the tenth century on, the emergence of a particular type of power, which in some countries lasted until today : the Sultanate. This title was in use for a very long period and in a very wide area. So it could not cover a single reality. By considering the exercise of power in various countries (Yemen, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Anatolia, Tunisia) for different periods (medieval, modern, until the dawn of the twentieth century), collaborative research in this folder question this particular form of leadership, which although absolute, saw the leaders interacting with the societies they governed. The Varia part of the review includes eight articles about different topics such as Islamic Archaeology, Urban History, Art History, Literary History and Islamic Studies.
