Die freie Reichsstadt St. Gallen liess bereits 1527 bei Christoph Froschauer in Zurich einen Katechismus drucken: die erste derartige Publikation in der Schweiz. Die nachkommende Generation sollte unterwiesen und es sollte ihr eine eiserne Ration – Apostolikum, Dekalog, Seligpreisungen, Unservater – mit auf den Lebensweg gegeben werden. Das biblische Motto Ihr Vater, reizt eure Kinder nicht zum Zorn (Eph 6,4), das dem Katechismus vorangestellt ist, dokumentiert eine kinderfreundliche Grundhaltung. Die Edition ist eine wichtige historische Quelle, da der reformierte Glaubenstyp, wie er spater genannt wurde, hier geradezu vollkommen vorliegt. Neben einer diplomatischen Wiedergabe des Texts bietet sie Wort- und Sacherklarungen, eine historische Einfuhrung und einen Ausblick auf die weitere katechetische Entwicklung bis hin zum Heidelberger Katechismus.
