La destruction des Bouddha de Bamiyan a revele la fragilite d’un patrimoine afghan qui avait deja subi de nombreux dommages ; elle en a aussi indirectement souligne l’incomparable richesse. L’emotion a tres vite donne naissance, en Afghanistan et dans la communaute internationale, a une volonte de restauration et a une politique de protection. Pour rendre hommage aux efforts entrepris sur place, en Afghanistan, le musee archeologique de Lattes a organise, du 5 au 7 mai 2003, un colloque international sur l’Afghanistan dont les actes sont publies dans ce volume. Le musee archeologique de Lattes, sous la direction de Christian Landes, se montrait ainsi fidele a une politique qui, depuis 1995, l’a conduit a organiser des conferences regulieres sur l’Afghanistan. Ou encore, a signer en fevrier 2004 un accord avec l’UNESCO l’autorisant a conserver provisoirement des objets disparus du Musee de Kaboul apres les evenements tragiques de 1993 en attendant leur restitution au moment que choisiront l’UNESCO et la communaute internationale. Le colloque, Afghanistan. Ancien carrefour entre l’Est et l’Ouest, a reuni plus de 70 savants venant de 14 pays et representant plus de 55 institutions, universites et musees internationaux. La variete des disciplines couvertes par les communications (l’archeologie, l’histoire de l’art, l’epigraphie et la numismatique), la nouveaute de certaines decouvertes (inscriptions grecques de Sophytos et d’Euthydeme par exemple) alliees a la qualite des intervenants ont permis de dresser un bilan des connaissances et de definir de possibles orientations de recherches. Ce volume regroupe 27 articles et couvre une periode qui va de l’age du Bronze a l’arrivee de l’Islam. Il offre a la communaute internationale des inedits epigraphiques, numismatiques, iconographiques et archeologiques. Il constitue donc un precieux temoignage de la grandeur du patrimoine afghan.
