Les fouilles de l’Ecole francaise d’Athenes a Philippes, commencees en 1914, ont ete actives de 1920 a 1937, avant leur reprise en 1977. Elles ont produit un important materiel scientifique, photographies, dessins d’architecture, manuscrits et estampages, conserve aux archives de l’EFA et dans le riche fonds photographique Paul Collart de l’Universite de Lausanne. A partir d’une documentation presque entierement inedite, le present ouvrage, centre sur la periode 1914-1950, qui prolonge l’exposition du centenaire inauguree a Thessalonique et a Kavala en octobre 2014, retrace l’histoire des fouilles, evoque les methodes et les conditions de travail des archeologues, et fait revivre les paysages et les populations d’une region qui s’est profondement transformee.
