Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres
Originally named the The Academy of Inscriptions and Medals, founded in 1683, the academy was initially tasked with creating Latin and French mottos for the king’s buildings, medals, and coins. In 1701, its mission shifted to advancing and disseminating knowledge on classical antiquity, the Middle Ages, and civilizations of the Near and Far East, now expanding to include Amerindian studies. Its work covers history, archaeology, art history, philology, linguistics, literature, and related fields like epigraphy, numismatics, and diplomacy. The academy, which publishes the Journal des savants, the oldest scientific journal still in print, continues a long tradition of scholarship, earning global prestige through its influential publications.
