The present volume makes an incursion into ancient sources relating to the creation of the first woman. It does so not just by providing a catalogue of ancient sources and authors, but also by trying to bring into dialogue as much as possible those ancient traditions of human creation within shared cultural areas, the ancient Near East and the Mediterranean basin, from the third to the first millennium B.C.E. For this reason, these traditions have been organised in the following way. First the Mesopotamian and Egyptian sources are analysed as they represent the oldest testimonies known about human creation. Then the Levantine sources are studied. As Greek sources may have been older than the Biblical testimonies, and as they may have been influenced by older Semitic sources, they come right after. Two contributions deal with the Hebrew Bible. Finally, the Persian sources are discussed and studied. A comprehensive response concludes the volume with some new insights from these ancient sources as we are concerned with the way they may or may not have dialogue with one another using a historical and comparative approach. – This volume closes a gap in existing research as traditions of the creation of human beings have generally been less studied than other fields of research in antiquity and often integrated into the larger studies of the world’s creation. Nonetheless, they have also been the subject of books and articles, which sometimes take a comparative approach. Yet this volume takes a new approach to the question by decisively asking for the accounts of the creation of the woman, thus continuing the reflection over the notion of gender as a social and cultural construct, further exploring the place of women in androcentric societies and patriarchal worlds.
