Ethische Orientierung im Markusevangelium

The discussion of early Christian ethics has entered a new phase – yet the Gospel of Mark has largely been overlooked. This volume systematically compiles contributions on the ethical dimensions of the earliest Gospel: from narrative ethics and social norms to the political implications of discipleship.

The Gospel of Mark has long been neglected in research on early Christian ethics. This volume addresses that gap. In systematically organized essays, the contributors explore the ethical dimensions of the earliest Gospel from a range of perspectives: methodological and hermeneutical foundations clarify what “ethics” can mean in Mark. Studies in narrative ethics demonstrate how characterization, spatial concepts, and parables convey ethical orientation. Contextual contributions situate Markan ethics within ancient Jewish and Greco-Roman traditions. Thematic studies address family and sexuality, social ethics, purity, political power, and the concept of true greatness. The findings show that Mark – contrary to a widespread assumption – offers a distinctive and multifaceted contribution to ethical reflection in the New Testament. The volume is dedicated to the memory of the Erlangen New Testament scholar Otto Merk (1933-2021), whose decades of research advanced the study of ethical questions in the New Testament.
