Ces dialogues sur la morale et la religion, dont Jean Baruzi n’avait edite qu’une partie sous le titre Trois dialogues mystiques inedits de Leibniz (1905), portent sur la piete ou amour de Dieu sur toutes choses. Cet amour consiste, selon Leibniz (1646-1716), dans la connaissance de la nature et de son divin auteur, ainsi que dans une action orientee vers le bonheur du genre humain. Ecrits vers 1679, les dialogues sont un eloge de la raison et une exhortation a l’employer, dans le domaine theorique comme pratique, contre toutes les formes que peut prendre l’antiphilosophie (fideisme, indifferentisme, scepticisme). La science doit etre cultivee car elle est une celebration de Dieu autant qu’une oeuvre au service de l’homme. Leibniz la concoit comme le fruit d’un travail collectif, inlassablement poursuivi, qui suppose une etroite collaboration entre les savants, leur respect commun de certains principes et l’appui des autorites politiques. Le lien essentiel entre progres scientifique, felicite de l’homme et gloire de Dieu est particulierement illustre par le Memoire pour des personnes eclairees et de bonne intention (redige entre 1692 et 1695), publie en appendice.
