Ausgehend nicht von der Vernunft, sondern vom Lebensprozess, entwirft Hans Jonas (1903-1993) sein philosophisches System. Dessen Kern ist Subjektivitat, verstanden als Wille alles Lebendigen zu sein. Der toten Materie abgetrotzt und doch auf sie als Lebensraum angewiesen, von ihr frei und doch ihrer bedurftig, Individuum gegenuber dem indifferenten Weltstoff und zugleich fortwahrend ihn erkundend, von ihm tangiert, bedroht und ihn selbst gestaltend. So erscheint Subjektivitat als Zentrum aller Lebensprozesse von ihrem allerersten Auftreten vor Jahrmilliarden an bis zu ihrer hochsten Entfaltung im Menschen. Von der Evolution im unendlichen Spiel kosmischer Zufalle hervorgebracht, erweist sie sich als ein kosmisches Datum. Im Lebensprozess von allem Anfang an verankert, versteht Jonas Subjektivitat ontologisch und nicht transzendental. Als Wille zum Leben ist sie auch entscheidendes Motiv fur das Prinzip Verantwortung. Ohne Subjektivitat – ihre Freiheit, Verantwortungsfahigkeit und die Hutung des Menschenbildes als Imago Dei – erscheint Jonas die Weiterwohnlichkeit der Erde in hochstem Masse gefahrdet. Ob jedoch die Wahrung menschlicher Wurde ohne die Wiedergewinnung der Kategorie des Heiligen uberhaupt moglich ist, bleibt fur ihn letztlich eine offene Frage.
