Das 1786 vom Zurcher Theologen und Schriftsteller Johann Caspar Lavater veroffentlichte Werk Nathanael markiert das Ende der Freundschaft zwischen Lavater und Goethe. Daniela Kohler gibt nicht nur das Werk selbst erstmals kommentiert heraus, sondern zeichnet zugleich in einer ausfuhrlichen Einleitung die religiose Kontroverse zwischen Lavater und Goethe nach. Goethe bewunderte Lavater zwar fur seine Empathie und sein Charisma, reagierte aber auf Lavaters Schrift mit scharfer Polemik gegen das Christentum. Daniela Kohler zeigt anhand von Lavaters theologischer und schriftstellerischer Entwicklung auf, dass der Zurcher Freund Goethe nichtsdestotrotz zum Nachdenken und Argumentieren uber die christliche Religion veranlasste.
