The martyrology/obituary of the cathedral chapter of Notre-Dame de la Seds in Toulon, a 12th century manuscript kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library, attracted the attention of Georges de Manteyer, then a member of the French School of Rome, at the end of the 19th century. Manteyer was primarily interested in the martyrology, while pointing out the presence of numerous marginal obits from the 12th century to 1587. The present volume provides the complete edition of the 831 marginal entries, which range from simple remembrances to complex statements. In addition to their memorial aspect, these notes shed light on the functioning of the cathedral chapter, its recruitment, the lay brotherhood associated with it, the lay people who entrusted the salvation of their souls to the prayers of the canons, as well as the urban history and topography of Toulonall this for a time when other sources are non-existent.
Le martyrologe-obituaire du chapitre cathedral de Notre-Dame de la Seds de Toulon, manuscrit du XIIe siecle conserve a la Bibliotheque apostolique Vaticane dans le fonds de la Reine Christine, avait attire a la fin du XIXe siecle l’attention de Georges de Manteyer, alors membre de l’Ecole francaise de Rome, qui en fit l’objet du memoire qu’il presenta en 1898 a l’Academie, memoire qui fut seulement publie en 1940 dans le Bulletin de la Societe d’etudes des Hautes-Alpes. Manteyer s’etait avant tout interesse au martyrologe, tout en signalant la presence de nombreux obits marginaux s’echelonnant du XIIe a 1587. Le present volume apporte l’edition integrale des 831 notices ajoutees sur les marges des eloges du martyrologe, qui allaient de la simple memoire a l’enonce des fondations faites a charge d’anniversaire. A cote de leur aspect strictement memoriel, ces notices nous eclairent sur le fonctionnement du chapitre cathedral, son recrutement, sur la confrerie laique qui lui etait associee, sur ces laics qui confiaient le salut de leurs ymes a la priere des chanoines, mais aussi sur l’histoire urbaine et la topographie de Toulon. Tout cela pour une epoque ou les sources sont inexistantes. L’edition de l’obituaire est suivie du releve des auctaria du martyrologe, un martyrologe d’Adon de la premiere famille, deuxieme recensio, qui meriterait a son tour une etude approfondie. Plusieurs index (hagiographique, noms de lieu et de personne, principales matieres) et onze planches en couleurs completent l’edition.
