Bis in die jungste Zeit war die Katholizismusforschung von nationalen Blickwinkeln bestimmt. Das Interesse richtete sich z. B. auf den Katholizismus in den Niederlanden oder in der Schweiz, in Frankreich, Deutschland oder in den Vereinigten Staaten. Lediglich in deren Beziehungen zum Papst als dem Zentrum der romisch-katholischen Weltkirche kam eine ubernationale Sicht zum Tragen. Der vorliegende Band will solche traditionellen Perspektiven aufbrechen. Die Beitrage richten ihr Augenmerk auf das bewegte 20. Jahrhundert: Der dynamische Wandel katholischer Identitat lasst sich nur transnational verstehen. Diese These wird anschaulich in grenzuberschreitenden Erfahrungen von bekannten, aber auch heute fast vergessenen katholischen Frauen und Mannern, ihren Organisationen und des globalen Jahrhundertereignisses der katholischen Kirche, des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils. Die methodischen Vorschlage bieten Anknupfungspunkte fur eine systematische Erforschung dieses vielgestaltigen transnationalen Katholizismus in kulturgeschichtlich und konfessionsubergreifender Perspektive.
