The Franz von Baader Edition brings together the most representative and insightful writings of the Catholic theologian, natural and social philosopher Franz von Baader (1765-1841) in four volumes. These texts vividly reflect Baader’s world of thought. In particular, his natural philosophical, ethical, religious, metaphysical as well as theosophical views stand out especially clearly in them. To date, these writings have not been published in a critical edition. As an editio princeps, the Franz von Baader Edition is the first edition with a text-critical apparatus, explanatory notes, bibliography, index of persons and subject index. The four-volume edition will contain a total of 28 chronologically arranged and annotated texts. Of particular value is the critical commentary, which explains the individual passages and introduces them in a scholarly manner. The new series Baaderiana, supervised by the editors of the edition, complements the edition project with studies on Baader’s work and activity. Thus the reading of Baader’s texts is deepened and illuminated by the latest findings of Baader research. The first volume contains six of Baader’s early works from the years 1792 to 1808, in which his basic natural philosophical attitudes emerge distinctively. Here Baader devotes himself to contemporary science, in particular to Kant’s dynamic philosophy of nature, to the question, essential for him, of a justification of ethics through physics, which becomes the core and fundamental guiding idea of his later speculation.
