Hume avait 28 ans quand, anonymement, parurent en janvier 1739 les deux premiers livres du Traite de la nature humaine. Qui trop philosophe, lui fut-il reproche, finit par tomber dans le scepticisme. Qui trop philosophe, concede-t-il, finit par tomber dans la melancolie. Mais c’est le prix a payer si l’on veut faire une science de la nature humaine qui soit experimentale. Une science sceptique, il est vrai, qui jamais ne confond les causes et les raisons. Et c’est tant pis si l’entendement, expliquant ses propres operations, ne satisfait pas la raison mais decouvre en son fond l’imagination et les passions. Quant a la melancolie, on s’en guerit en jouant au trictrac.
