Secondo diversi studi, il contatto con la cultura romana ha cambiato profondamente il ginnasio greco, sia dal punto di vista istituzionale che architettonico. Il presente volume raccoglie e riesamina le fonti letterarie, epigrafiche e archeologiche relative ai ginnasi della Grecia continentale, nel periodo compreso tra l’inizio dell’ingerenza romana (II sec. a.C.) e il declino dell’istituzione (IV sec. d.C.). Dalla loro disamina, si risale ai criteri con cui il ginnasio allarga la partecipazione a nuove categorie di utenti; si esplora il ruolo educativo del ginnasio nell’ambito della polis, evidenziando continuità e aggiornamenti nelle attività proposte all’utenza; si ripercorre l’evoluzione planimetrica degli spazi ginnasiali, che nel contesto in esame mostra strategie di aggiornamento diverse rispetto all’area microasiatica e cicladica; infine, si esplorano le possibili cause di declino dell’istituzione in epoca tardoantica.
