Petrus Chrysologus gestaltete seine sermones so, dass sie zu einem Bildungserlebnis werden konnten. Lina Hantel rekonstruiert die Predigttatigkeit des Bischofs von Ravenna (ca. 430-450) und zeichnet dabei ein Bild der Kommunikation des Evangeliums, die fur die Stabilitat des Christentums in einer Umbruchsituation massgeblich war. Sie zeigt, auf welche Bildungsgehalte der Prediger zuruckgreifen konnte, um die biblischen Texte zu interpretieren und sodann eine Botschaft fur seine Gemeinde zu formulieren, die die Bildung der Zuhorer auch uber die Situation der Predigt hinaus sicherzustellen vermochte.
