Der Romerbrief von 1919 ist Karl Barths erstes Buch. In ihm kundigt sich die theologische Wende von der liberalen Theologie des 19. Jahrhunderts zur “Dialektischen Theologie” der 1920er Jahre an. Als Gemeindepfarrer fragt Barth nach einer sachgemaaen Grundlegung einer verantwortlichen Verkundigung, Unterweisung und Seelsorge. Als Zeitgenosse ist Barth bewegt von der im 1. Weltkrieg offenbar gewordenen Katastrophe eines optimistischen Kulturprotestantismus und von der Dringlichkeit der sozialen Frage. Antwort sucht Barth in einer neuen, intensiven Zuwendung zur Heiligen Schrift. Nicht zufallig ist es der Romerbrief des Paulus, an dem Barth dieses neue Hinhoren auf die Bibel einubt, also jene Schrift, die auch fur Augustinus und fur Martin Luther entscheidende Quelle fur die Reformation der Kirche gewesen ist. Der Band erhellt den zweijahrigen konzentrierten Arbeitsprozea des Autors durch einen Vergleich zwischen dem Manuskriptentwurf und der zum Teil vollig neu geschriebenen Druckfassung. Sie gibt ferner zahlreiche Hinweise auf verborgene zeitgeschichtliche Auseinandersetzungen.
