Die mikrogeschichtliche Studie von Sara Mehlmer bietet uberraschende Einblicke in das Handeln spanischer Akteure in den Enklaven Melilla und Ceuta. In diesen war das Leben im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert nicht nur von zahlreichen Gegensatzen und Konflikten, sondern immer wieder auch von Kontakt und Kooperation gepragt. Diese Region zwischen Europa und Afrika, Spanien und Marokko, Christentum und Islam schien aufgrund ihrer besonderen Lage enormes Konfliktpotenzial zu bergen. Und doch war es gerade die Grenzlage, die nicht nur fur Konfrontation und Abschottung sorgte, sondern vielmehr auch die Etablierung von Strategien zur Konfliktbeilegung notwendig machte und grenzuberschreitende Kontakte begunstigte. Die situative Gewichtung verschiedener Differenzkategorien – darunter Religion, Nation, Ethnie sowie Gender – und ein damit verbundener mehr oder minder flexibler Umgang mit diesen Kategorien auf institutioneller wie individueller Ebene spielten dabei eine nicht unerhebliche Rolle.
