This book collects the contributions made by scholars who gathered to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the signing of the ground-breaking ecumenical document, The Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JDDJ). Since its signing on October 31, 1999, three other world communions have associated with the Joint Declaration (Methodists, Anglicans, and Reformed).
The contributors, each from their own ecclesial perspective, reflect on the importance of the JDDJ for all ecumenical dialogues in the western church and begin exploring questions that the JDDJ itself poses concerning ecclesiology. The conversation broadens as they ask what are the next steps for deepening ecclesial communion around this fundamental consensus. The book begins with two reflections on the process and content by one of its primary authors, Professor Theo Dieter from the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg.
