Die Konigsbucher beschreiben rund vier Jahrhunderte israelitischer Geschichte: von ca. 1050 bis ca. 650 v. Chr. Mit den darin enthaltenen Konigsannalen, Geschichtsnovellen und Erzahlsammlungen ergibt sich eine generell zuverlassige und zugleich erzahlerisch anspruchsvolle Geschichtsschreibung. Im Vordergrund steht die staatliche Geschichte, also das Handeln der Konige, doch damit verzahnt ist die Religionsgeschichte, verkorpert durch Priester und Propheten. Auch die Geschichten des Nordreichs Israel und des Sudreichs Juda greifen ineinander. Hinzu kommen zahlreiche Beruhrungspunkte mit der Geschichte der umliegenden Lander und der damaligen Grossreiche. Walter Dietrich zeigt auf, wie zahllose Informationen und viele spannende Erzahlungen in den Konigsbuchern verbunden sind zu einem kunstvollen, mosaikartigen Historienbild.
