This study examines the relationship between the novel and the identity narratives of its readers or listeners, dating back to its medieval origins. By situating the Romanesque Individual within the framework of Narrative Personality Theory, the study examines its parodic nature through excerpts from Thomas’s Tristan, Chrétien de Troyes’s Cligès, Jean Renart’s L’Escoufle, and the anonymous works Jaufre and Claris et Laris. The authorial fictions of protagonism that characterize novels such as Partenopeu de Blois, Rainaut de Beaujeu’s Bel Inconnu, Joufroi de Poitiers, and Boccaccio’s Filocolo are also traced back to this operational field. A comparison with the modern counterparts of Don Quixote, Madame Bovary, and the protagonist of Proust’s Recherche allows for a concluding reflection on the idea that the Romantic Individual is intrinsically nostalgic.
