This volume gathers the proceedings discussed in a 2023 Workshop organised at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid by the Departamento de Prehistoria, Historia Antigua y Arqueologia in collaboration with the Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Antichita of Sapienza Universita di Roma. These papers address problems of an onomastic nature from a legal (not linguistic) perspective: the basic idea is that Roman onomastics cannot be dissociated from the legal status of people. An attempt is being made to valorise the less common names which are distant from the classic Roman onomastic system based on the tria nomina. The Spanish situation is compared with that of Northern Italy, whose inscriptions also present various problems of interpretation. More than answers and solutions, this volume aims to reopen the discussion on topics related to “Romanization” that are always fascinating.
