Moise Maimonide (1135-1204), la plus grande figure du judaisme medieval. Medecin, savant, talmudiste, philosophe au savoir immense, il a reexpose l’ensemble de la tradition juive en reference a Aristote, qu’il a contribue a faire decouvrir a l’occident chretien. On examine ici son oeuvre philosophico-religieuse – particulierement son grand code, le Michne Torah [Repetition de la Loi] et le Guide des Egares qui l’a rendu celebre – en tachant de faire ressortir l’unite de son inspiration: la volonte d’accueillir la Revelation du Sinai avec force et mesure, preservant les droits et exigences de la Raison en tous domaines, en toutes circonstances, ne cedant jamais sur la Raison sous pretexte de Foi. On examine egalement ses traites de medecine pour en montrer l’etonnante actualite. On s’interesse enfin a son influence – de Thomas d’Aquin a Leibniz, Spinoza et Mendelssohn – et a sa posterite, de Leo Strauss a Yeshayahou Leibowitz.
