Mit dem Wandel des vormodernen Stadtburgertums zum Bildungs- und Wirtschaftsburgertum des 19. Jahrhunderts veranderte sich auch das Verhaltnis zu Kunst und Kultur. Der vorliegende Band widmet sich dem Kunstverstandnis der Burger, ihrer Auffassung des Kunstlertums, vor allem aber ihrer Rolle als Mazen und Sammler von Kunst. Am Beispiel ausgewahlter Stadte und Zeitraume zeigen die Autoren, wie sich bestimmte Interessen, nationale Ideen oder privater Geschmack mit der Forderung kunstlerischen Schaffens verbanden. Auf vielfaltige Weise pragte das stadtische Burgertum Kunst und Kultur: das Sammeln und Besitzen von Bildern gehorte ebenso dazu wie Architektur und Stadtplanung oder das Ratssilber als Mittel der Reprasentation einer Stadt.
