English summary: Ursula Reutter describes the life and works of Damasus by providing a precise reconstruction, classification and interpretation of his writings. There is a translation and a footnote commentary for each original text, and the author shows how they were passed down through the ages, dates the texts and provides a context in history and church politics. She demonstrates that Damasus pursued an agenda for the Christianization of Rome and the Romanization of Christianity and thus was very much involved in the development of the papacy. It was Damasus who consolidated the powers of the Roman bishop through the connection to the emperor and the ancient Roman tradition and who not only announced and implemented his claim to be the first among the bishops of the entire church, but also substantiated this. German description: Bischof Damasus von Rom ist eine wichtige Personlichkeit der Kirchengeschichte, die in der Forschungsgeschichte aufgrund der unubersichtlichen Quellenlage durchaus sehr unterschiedliche Bewertung und Wurdigung erfahren hat. Ursula Reutter beleuchtet deshalb Leben und Werk des Damasus durch eine genaue Rekonstruktion, Einordnung und Interpretation seiner Schriften von neuem. Zu dieser ebenso vielseitigen wie schwierigen Textgrundlage gehoren unter anderem die Epigrammata Damasiana , das Decretale ad Gallos episcopos , der Codex Veronensis LX , der Tomus Damasi und das Decretum Gelasianum (Damasi) . Um den Bezug zu Damasus herstellen zu konnen, wird jeweils dem Originaltext eine Ubersetzung und ein Fussnotenkommentar beigegeben, wobei Uberlieferungswege nachvollzogen, Datierungen vorgenommen und der historische und kirchenpolitische Kontext erschlossen werden. Hieraus ergeben sich verschiedene Wirkungsbereiche des Damasus: der Blick wandert von Rom aus uber die westliche Kirche und den Kontakt zu den Kaisern bis zu den Verhandlungen mit der ostlichen Kirche und dem Anspruch des Damasus gegenuber der gesamten Kirche. Anhand dieser einzelnen Mosaiksteine zeigt die Autorin, dass Damasus ein Programm der Christianisierung Roms und der Romanisierung des Christentums verfolgt und somit ganz wesentlich Anteil an der Entstehung des Papsttums hat; denn Damasus ist es, der die Macht des romischen Bischofs einerseits durch die Anbindung an die Kaiser und die antike romische Tradition gestarkt hat, andererseits seinen Anspruch, den ersten Rang unter den Bischofen der ganzen Kirche innezuhaben, nicht nur verkundet und praktiziert, sondern auch begrundet hat.
