Gerontologie, die Wissenschaft des Alter(n)s, kann seit der Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts eine rasante Entwicklung als multidisziplinarer Forschungsbereich verzeichnen. Dabei sind es vor allem die Sozialwissenschaften und die Medizin (Geriatrie), die mit ihren Fragestellungen die Richtung des gerontologischen Diskurses bestimmen. Der Einbezug geisteswissenschaftlicher Perspektiven fallt demgegenuber eher sparlich aus. Vor allem ist in der deutschsprachigen Diskussion auf weite Strecken festzustellen, dass so etwas wie eine differenzierte, fachlich etablierte gerontologisch-ethische Diskussion fehlt. Gerontologie befasst sich nur am Rande mit ethischen Fragen. Umgekehrt hat die philosophische und theologische Ethik das Thema Alter noch kaum in seiner aktuellen Bedeutung entdeckt. Auf diesem Hintergrund tragt das vorliegende Buch anhand einer Diskussion ausgewahlter, zentraler Themen einer gerontologischen Ethik dazu bei, Gerontologie und Ethik verstarkt miteinander ins Gesprach zu bringen.
