Die ukrainische Literatur ist im Bewusstsein des europaischen Lesepublikums wenig prasent, obwohl das Land uber eine reiche poetische Tradition verfugt. Der Klang von Sonnenklarinetten stellt in ukrainischer Sprache und in deutscher Erstubersetzung 65 Gedichte von drei fuhrenden Lyrikern der ukrainischen Moderne vor: Pavlo Tytschyna (1891-1967), Maxim Rylsky (1895-1964) und Bohdan Ihor Antonytsch (1909-1937). Der von den Gedichten abgesteckte Zeitraum – ca. 1910 bis 1936 – war von dramatischen historischen und politischen Umwalzungen gekennzeichnet. Gleichzeitig signalisiert die Zeit am Anfang des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts europaweit einen kunstlerischen Aufbruch zu neuen Ufern. Die hier vorgestellten Gedichte sind in diesem doppelten Kontext der historischen und kunstlerischen Turbulenz entstanden. Die modernistische Innovation ist fur alle drei Dichter mehr als nur ein formales Experiment – sie wird zum Ausdruck einer Suche nach geistiger Sinngebung in einer aus den Fugen geratenen Welt.
