Am Beispiel von Friedrich Schiller, Wilhelm und Alexander von Humboldt zeigt der Band auf, dass der Deutsche Idealismus ein Realismusverstandnis gepragt hat, dessen uberragende Bedeutung darin besteht, das Projekt der Moderne aus der provinziellen Enge philosophischer Studierstuben hinausgefuhrt und um ein transdisziplinares, interkulturelles Wissenschaftsverstandnis erweitert zu haben. Schiller und die Humboldt-Bruder stehen stellvertretend fur den Begriff eines Weltburgertums und fur die Idee einer globalen Wissenschaft, die getragen ist von einer Phantasie, der keine Grenzen gesetzt sind und die doch nicht ins Imaginare entschwindet, sondern Realitaten erforschen will. Durch den Blick auf die drei Universalgelehrten soll das Profil einer intellektuellen Konfiguration um 1800 rekonstruiert werden, die bislang hinter der Erforschung anderer wirkungstrachtiger Beziehungen und Zusammenhange das Nachsehen hatte.
