English summary: Creating a self-image supposed a simultaneous mastery of one’s own identity and self-expression. But this double mastery requires being aware of the singularity that has troubled ancient philosophers: identity is enclosed in its tautological condition and the individual in its monadic singularity. From Apuleius and Petrarch to Gregory of Nazianzus, to Plotinus, Porphyry, Gregory of Nyssa and Julius the Emperor, this volume presents case studies where one’s self-awareness appears through a speech in proper noun or through the inverse mirror of a rejected portrait. French text.
