Das Briefbuch Wibalds von Stablo und Corvey (1098-1158) ist die wichtigste Briefsammlung zur fruhen Stauferzeit und zudem im Autograph uberliefert. Wibald, seit 1130 Abt von Stablo, wurde im Herbst 1146 auf Betreiben Konig Konrads III. auch zum Abt von Corvey an der Weser gewahlt. In dieser Situation, die die Verantwortung fur zwei bedeutende, sechs Tagesreisen voneinander entfernte Kloster mit sich brachte, entschloss sich Wibald, eine Art ‘tragbares Archiv’ anzulegen. Nach Dossiers geordnet wurden die uberwiegend undatierten Schreiben in den verschiedenen Angelegenheiten, mit denen Wibald sich auch im Auftrag des Konigs und des Papstes befassen musste, eingetragen. Das Briefbuch umfasst den Zeitraum von Ende 1146 bis Herbst 1157, als Wibald von Friedrich Barbarossa gebeten wurde, zum Kaiser nach Byzanz zu reisen. Von dieser Gesandtschaft kehrte der Abt nicht mehr lebend zuruck. Die Edition des Briefbuches, das 450 Stucke von und an Wibald sowie Schreiben Dritter enthalt, die von ihm verfasst wurden, folgt im Unterschied zu den Editionen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts der Reihenfolge im Autograph und versucht auch in der Einleitung, die Entstehung des autographen Codex deutlich zu machen.
