Die rasante Industrialisierung im 19. Jahrhundert fuhrte auch in der Schweiz zu einschneidenden Veranderungen: wirtschaftliche Entwicklung und Wohlstand auf der einen, Verelendung auf der anderen Seite. Um die gravierenden sozialen Auswirkungen der Industrialisierung zu bekampfen, propagierte eine Gruppe protestantischer Unternehmer unter der Leitung des Basler Seidenbandindustriellen und Ratsherrn Karl Sarasin (1815-1886) einen christlichen Patriarchalismus. Auf dem Hintergrund der kontroversen Auseinandersetzungen der Kirchen mit der sozialen Frage erforscht Marcel Koppli das sozialpolitische Anliegen dieser protestantischen Unternehmer und ergrundet, wieso die Konzeption des christlichen Patriarchalismus letztlich scheitern musste.
