Johann Caspar Lavater (1741-1801), Pfarrer, Philosoph und Schriftsteller, wird meist nur in Verbindung mit seiner Physiognomik wahrgenommen. Dies vermag aber nicht sein ganzes Wirken abzubilden. Er zeigte den Weg zu einem individuellen Glauben, der nicht von Dogma und Moral genahrt wird, sondern von der Empfindsamkeit, der Selbstergrundung und der Beobachtungsgabe des einzelnen Menschen.
