Cet important ouvrage de 553 pages (+ 16 pages en chiffres romains) est abondamment illustre par 138 figures au trait reparties dans le texte, et 142 photographies en noir et blanc. Ce volume decrit, analyse et commente les fouilles russo-yemenites, menees de 1972 a 1994, sur le site de l’ancienne ville portuaire hadrami de Qani’ (actuel B’ir ‘Ali), situe sur la cote sud de la Republique du Yemen. Redige en francais et en anglais, sous la direction de Aleksander V. Sedov (directeur de la fouille, Institut d’Etudes Orientales, Academie des Sciences de Russie, Moscou), et J.-F. Salles (Maison de l’Orient et de la Mediterranee, Lyon – IFAPO, Amman), l’ouvrage rassemble les contributions de dix-sept chercheurs reparties en vingt-trois chapitres et un appendice. Une carte du Yemen, une liste des auteurs, une liste legendee des figures et des planches completent l’ensemble. La premiere partie (treize chapitres), consacree aux ” Fouilles et [au] materiel “, detaille les travaux archeologiques menes sur les differents secteurs de la ville antique (la Cite-Basse, la Citadelle et la necropole, etc. : description et analyse des monuments). Un catalogue raisonne de plus 2000 artefacts (ceramiques, monnaies, objets en os, en ivoire, en verre, en metal, en pierre, etc.), souvent inedits, complete et alimente l’etude architecturale et stratigraphique des vestiges. Des contributions specifiques, en particulier archeozoologiques, permettent egalement une analyse ethnologique du site de Qani’. La seconde partie (dix chapitres) traite de l’ ” Epigraphie et [de l’] histoire ” a travers le temoignage des auteurs grecs et latins, et a travers l’etude et le commentaire de plusieurs inscriptions ou graffiti sud-arabiques, nord-semitiques et grecs trouves in situ ; ou de termes specifiques (cf. le chapitre sur le vin). En guise de conclusion, le volume analyse le role joue par le royaume hadrami de Qani’ et l’Arabie du Sud dans le developpement du commerce et des routes maritimes entre la Mediterranee orientale et l’Inde, du Ier au VIe s. ap. J.-C.
