The Aachen Cathedral Treasury is one of the most important church-treasuries in Europe. It reflects the history of the Marienkirche in Aachen as the chief church and burial site of Charlemagne, as the coronation church of the kings of the Holy Roman Empire, and as a pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. As such an important church, it has had its share of sensitive losses. This book shows artifacts which previously belonged to the treasury of Aachens Marienkirche but which have since been dispersed throughout the whole world.
English summary: The Aachen Cathedral Treasury is one of the most important church-treasuries in Europe. It reflects the history of the Marienkirche in Aachen as the chief church and burial site of Charlemagne, as the coronation church of the kings of the Holy Roman Empire, and as a pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. As such an important church, it has had its share of sensitive losses. This book shows artifacts which previously belonged to the treasury of Aachen’s Marienkirche but which have since been dispersed throughout the whole world. Each of these objects is presented in words and images and they also help to explain the fate of other objects likewise caught up in the history of the treasury’s dispersal, which remains a part of the changing history of the Marienkirche. Those objects which are no longer present in Aachen still play a role in the European dimension of the cathedral’s history: Why does Austria imagine itself as owner of the imperial insignia from the Aachen treasury? Who sold pieces from the Aachen cathedral treasury to Brussels, London, Paris and Berlin and why? Why did the cathedral clergy sell its library to half of Europe in the 18th century? Such questions and their positive and negative connections clearly set the Marienkirche of Aachen in an international context.
