English summary: This essay provides a unique perspective on the paradoxes of tolerance and democracy. When pushed too far, tolerance can consist of not tolerating intolerance, marginalizing groups and individuals who deviate from the moral, social, and political norm. If democracy means providing a political space for all, this includes a tolerance of diverse opinions, concepts and ways of life. The more this is analyzed, the more we see that theorizing tolerance means tracing its borders. French description: Paradoxalement, si l’on est parfois prompt a rejeter l’imperatif de tolerance, on se garde bien de revendiquer l’intolerance. Et meme quand on endosse encore l’ideal de tolerance, on pousse sa logique apparente jusqu’a la contradiction : la tolerance consiste a ne pas tolerer l’intolerant, l’intolerance, l’intolerable. Cette rhetorique est une menace interieure pour le bien commun; elle encourage la censure, l’interdiction de manifester sa difference et finalement renforce la marginalisation des individus et des groupes qui devient de la norme morale, sociale ou politique. Si la democratie a pour finalite l’inclusion politique de tous les citoyens en rendant effectif leur droit de cite, elle a pour ressort la tolerance de la diversite de leurs opinions, de leurs conceptions de la vie bonne et de leurs modes de vie. Ce livre defend une these modeste et essaie d’en tirer les consequences pratiques a travers l’examen de plusieurs cas : enseignement creationniste, blaspheme, discours de haine, demandes d’accommodements pour motifs religieux, etc. Plus on analyse les cas de ce genre en cherchant a determiner des points d’equilibre, plus on se persuade que faire la theorie de la tolerance consiste surtout a en tracer les contours.
