La crise de l’Etat providence s’alimente aujourd’hui d’un soupcon: le transfert de ressources en direction des plus defavorises n’encourage-t-il pas les comportements irresponsables? N’est-il pas, au fond, la cause des maux qu’il pretend guerir? Pour repondre a cette accusation, certains egalitaristes ont tente d’inflechir la theorie de la justice grace au principe de responsabilite: oui a la compensation des inegalites dues au hasard, non a celle des inegalites qui sont la consequence de choix differents. La justice sociale residerait donc dans une neutralisation du hasard qui laisserait en revanche les individus assumer la responsabilite de leurs options personnelles. Les difficultes insurmontables auxquelles se heurte cette suggestion indiquent cependant qu’il convient de l’abandonner et qu’une societe juste pretend, non pas traiter chacun en fonction de ses actes, mais garantir a tous les bases d’un fonctionnement autonome.
