Church buildings are popular. They represent treasure troves for an experience of faith built in stone and made visible, and they hold an added value of having a distinctly Christian connotation. However, church buildings – especially in cities – are being visited more and more by very different people. This therefore gives rise to questions. Visitors ask about the meaning and significance of paintings, sculptures, inscriptions and the space itself, in particular where churches are operated by people with different thoughts and beliefs. This increasing appeal shows that it is necessary to reclaim church buildings in their function as the constructed texts of the Christian faith. The authors combine theoretical approaches with practical insights: a theological introduction is followed by contributions on church pedagogy and excurses on the history of art and architecture. Practical case studies conclude the study. In this way fresh insights emerge on the issue of how church buildings can be understood and made accessible.
