English summary: On the backrest of the bronze couch found in the Celtic royal burial site in Hochdorf there are two engraved drawings that show a twin-axled wagon pulled by horses on which a man is standing with a large shield and a sword: the hero on the wagon. In this study, Gunter Mansfeld portrays the development of the wheeled transportation through the millennia, from the first authenticated accounts of wagons up to the time at which the construction of the Hochdorf wagon can be verified in history. This date also marks the end of a phase of completely new wagon design which was not to be improved upon until modern times.
