Antiquarians in the Renaissance realized just how important coins were for research on antiquity. This is evident in their collections, in important books from the early modern period, in the revelations to be found in personal correspondence and in unedited manuscripts. These conference proceedings discuss the iconic and heuristic validity of coins for study of the history of ancient civilization and culture while also addressing issues surrounding the illustration, application, transformation and contextualization of coins and images of coins. By combining numismatic and art history based research approaches in a comparative context, this volume makes a contribution to the history of humanities in antiquarian research. German text.

English summary: Antiquarians in the Renaissance realized just how important coins were for research on antiquity. This is evident in their collections, in important books from the early modern period, in the revelations to be found in personal correspondence and in unedited manuscripts. Im Tagungsband werden die ikonische und heuristische Valenz der Munzen fur die Aneignung der antiken Zivilisationsgeschichte und Kultur sowie Fragen der Abbildung, Applikation, Transformation und Kontextualisierung von Munzen und Munzbildern erortert.
