English summary: This volume edited by Carolin Arlt and Martin Andreas Stadler presents lectures from the fourth Faiyum conference held in the monastery of Bronnbach in May 2011. Egyptologists, papyrologists, historians of ancient history and field archaeologists examine the real lives of the Egyptians under Ptolemaic and Roman rule. The studies focus on the subjects’ life, the economy, religiosity and the Egyptian efforts to keep a distance from, take a position against or cooperate with the central Ptolemaic government or the local Roman administration.
