Der Kult der Thebaoschen Legion.

Vor rund 1700 Jahren soll eine ganze romische Legion Soldaten beim heutigen Saint Maurice – das nach dem Kommandanten Mauritius benannt ist – fur ihre christliche Uberzeugung getotet worden sein. Diese Legende ist im ausgehenden 4. Jahrhundert entstanden. Heilige der Thebaischen Legion sind Patrone zahlreich er Kirchen und Stadte . Historisch gesehen zeugt die Legende unter anderem von der Ausbreitung des Christentums, des Monchtums sowie der in der Spatantike einsetzenden christlichen Bautatigkeit. Die Kultur der Martyrerverehrung hat wahrend vielen Jahrhunderten kollek tiveSinnstiftung geleistet und tut es noch immer: Geschichtliche Kontingenzen und ihre emotionalen Auswirkungen werden dabei auf ein die Zeiten uberdauerndes Netzwerk von Orten und Erzahlungen bezogen: ein ritualisiertes Tun, das sowohl religiose und wissenschaftliche wie ebenso allgemein gelaufige kulturelle Praktiken und Techniken anwendet. Was Macht und Ohnmacht der Martyrer ausmacht, kommt dadurch in erstaunlich stabilen Formen immer wieder neu zur Wirkung.
