Mady’in Sylih, l’ancienne Hegra des Nabateens, al-Hijr en arabe, est le premier site d’Arabie Saoudite a avoir ete inscrit sur la liste du Patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco. C’etait en 2008, alors que la Mission archeologique francaise de Mady’in Sylih vanait d’achever son premier programme de recherche sur le terrain. Parmi les objectifs de ce dernier figuraient la cartographie, le relve et la description systematiques de tous les tombeaux et chambres rupestres du site. Ces monuments, soigneusement numerotes par l’Institut Geographique National en 1978 et 1979, sont connus depuis la fin du XIXe siecle par les comptes rendus des premiers voyageurs, notamment Charles Doughty et Charles Huber. La contribution principale a l’archeologie et a l’epigraphie de Hegra vient toutefois des photographies, releves et descriptions publies il y a cent ans par les peres dominicains de l’Ecole biblique et archeologique francaise de Jerusalem, Antonin Jaussen et Raphael Savignac. Comparables a ceux de Petra, les quatre-vingt-treize tombeaux a facade decoree de Hegra s’en distinguent par quatre specificites au moins: ils sont parfois mieux conserves; nombre d’entre eux sont inacheves; beaucoup portent des elements de decor architectural qui ne sont pas attestes ou pas habituels a Petra; surtout, un tiers d’entre eux presentent sur leur facade une inscription nabateenne datee. Les deux volumes de cet ouvrage decrivent pour la premiere fois les tombeaux de Hegra de maniere exhaustive et offrent un commentaire general sur leurs inscriptions, sur les techniques de taille, sur l’architecture et sur le decor architectural. Le premier volume contient cinq chapitres rediges par quatre contributeurs, tous membres de la Mission archeologique de Mady’in Sylih. Le second volume rassemble le catalogue et les planches.
