Influenced by Amyraut and the school of Saumur, Louis Tronchin distanced himself from the Calvinist orthodoxy which reigned in Geneva, distinguished by its critique of scholasticism. Although still attached to Calvin, he was an important figure in the evolution of the Protestant world in the second half of the seventeenth century.

Review - French Maitre venere par des etudiants aussi differents que Bayle, Le Clerc ou Ostervald, Louis Tronchin (1629-1705) reste un personnage mysterieux, surtout parce qu'il n'a jamais rien publie de crainte que sa pensee, marquee par Amyraut et l'ecole de Saumur, ne soit jugee heterodoxe par ses collegues de l'Academie de Geneve, gardiens autoproclames du calvinisme. Le present ouvrage analyse cette pensee encore impregnee de celle de Calvin, mais deja critique de la scolastique au nom, notamment, du cartesianisme. Au-dela d'une theologie se dessine le monde protestant de la seconde moitie du XVIIsiecle, secoue par la revocation de l'edit de Nantes et la Glorieuse Revolution anglaise. Tronchin en est parfois l'acteur et toujours l'observateur perspicace.
