English summary: The prophet Jeremiah is unique in that he is endowed by God with responsibility for “the nations and the kingdoms”. This universal mission reflects a new understanding of God and illustrates, at the same time, a changed understanding of the role of prophecy in the Old Testament. We know much more about Jeremiah’s life than about the life of any other prophet. It is above all a life of suffering which culminates outwardly in persecution and mortal danger. Even worse is the inner loneliness of the prophet and his pain about the rejection of God by the people. But the Book of Jeremiah is also a witness to a new salvation which blossoms amidst doom.
