English summary: From the fourth century B.C. up to the end of Byzantine rule in 638 A.D., thousands of inscriptions, chiefly in stone and clay, were written in the Holy Land in Egyptian, Canaanite-Phoenician, Hebraic, Aramaic, and Greek and have survived to today. They are primary witnesses of the cultural, religious, political and linguistic situation of the region; sometimes the inscriptions give an interesting view into the daily life of the population. The numerous materials have been partly presented in extensive, scholarly editions but what is missing is a new publication, which reviews the most interesting inscription and makes them available for the broader audience interested in such inscription. The present book presents 131 inscriptions in line drawings and offers the possibility for the reader to transliterate or transcribe or even, with the help of provided clarifications, to translate the inscriptions. Through the additional and very valuable translations, the inscriptions become relevant for a broader audience interested in the culture, religion and history of the Holy Land as well as theologians, Egyptologists, Near Eastern scholars, Jewish studies, historians and the students of these disciplines.
