English summary: The act of helping is often described as diakonia in the context of religious and social services. What can and should be the reasons for providing such help from a theological perspective? And how should one deal with the wide variety of these different reasons? This volume shows that the nature of diakonia is not actually the act of helping itself, but the variety of different motives for doing so. Along with exegetical and systematic theological approaches, the contributions also take denominational, trans-denominational and interreligious perspectives into account.
