Im Februar 1987, wenige Wochen vor seinem Tod, hielt Jacob Taubes vor einer kleinen Schar von Zuhorern 4 Paulus- Vorlesungen, die er als sein geistiges Vermachtnis auffaate. Darin betritt er das Feld der Paulus-Forschung, eine Domane der christlichen Bibelwissenschaft, als radikaler Auaenseiter. In seiner Gegen-Lekture des Romerbriefs stellt er die herkommlichen Themen in ganzlich neue Kontexte und arbeitet so die am christlichen Paulus getilgten judischen Zuge heraus. Taubes versteht seine Auseinandersetzung mit dem judischen Paulus nicht als ein Stuck wissenschaftlich historischer Rekonstruktion. Vielmehr geht es ihm darum, an diesem Kreuzungspunkt von Judentum und Urchristentum Ausblicke auf Glaubens- und Lebensformen zu offnen, die durch institutionelle Verfestigung verschuttet und in der geschichtlichen Entwicklung vollends verdrangt worden sind. Die Vorlesungen sind eine judische Dekonstruktion der christlichen Wirkungsgeschichte des Romerbriefs, die im Banne der Formel “Glaube statt Werke” steht.
