Betrachtet man Zeit als ein soziales Konstrukt und nicht nur als eine physikalische Gegebenheit, so konnen chronologische Konzepte, Systeme und Praktiken wichtige Einblicke in das Selbstverstandnis und die Funktionsweise von Gesellschaften geben. Im Mittelpunkt stehen 60 Quellen aus Agypten, dem Vorderen Orient sowie der griechischen und romischen Welt, die vom 3. Jahrtausend v. Chr. bis in die christliche Spatantike datieren. Das Spektrum reicht von Malereien und Reliefs uber literarische Texte und Urkunden bis hin zu Instrumenten und Bauwerken, darunter wohlbekannte Beispiele ebenso wie bislang wenig beachtete Liebhaberstucke der Autoren. In allen Beitragen werden verwandte Quellen erfasst, technische Aspekte erklart und die Zeugnisse in soziokultureller Hinsicht ausgewertet.
